when I got my new 6620 I was told by the mechanics who worked there to do the exact same thing. engage the feeder house then the machine.
to the o.p. have you checked runout of that shaft on the other end? I suspect you may have a bent shaft.. .002 is max. mine was out .010 and I could feel it in the seat.
