When you look at randomized controlled trials LDL when compared to all cause mortality is almost meaningless. Might be a tiny effect on heart related mortality but other things are vastly more important.

When the statin drug companies say what the reduction of risk of heart attack is and give a percentage, it is stated as RELATIVE risk instead of absolute risk. If you don't know the difference don't feel bad, it appears most doctors don't either. Otherwise they likely would not recommend statin therapy.

Watch several of the Ivor Cummins videos that Clodbuster gave the link to. Another good one is Dr Paul Mason. Watch Ivor first though.

If you page back through Kitchen Table there have been several discussions on cholesterol and statins. Here is a great video on the subject.

If you actually want to lower it and please your doctor, Dave Feldman has a protocol that involves eating certain foods for the three days preceding the test. When a person learns about that they should come up with the realization just how much fluctuation there can be in LDL just based on what you eat before the test. Yet you get a single test and the doctor bases his recommendation for your prescription for a whole year till the next test??????  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYVRKtoRpQk

The more important issue is to raise HDL and lower triglycerides. It is the ratio of the two that has some importance. The way to do that is to cut out sugar plus reduce starchy carbohydrates and refined carbohydrates. Improving health vs improving numbers that do not mean much.
