I wouldn’t cut/ break the handle tie, if it were mine. Once you’ve done that, you should not use it for anything but 2 - 30A, 120V circuits, of which there generally aren’t many of those circuits needed. You wouldn’t want to use it as a 240V breaker, since it’d be possible only one half of the breaker could trip, leaving the other side hit, potentially having deadly results.
