Subject: Built my pulley spreader

North West IA/western AZ
Trying to tighten a 3 belt sheave and had trouble keeping it parallel. Looked at buying but the only one I found had no data for length. I looked around and in 15 minutes had scrounged up enough parts to make my own. It worked great and all 3 belts were tight so I tightened the bolts on the slide and removed the spreader. The belts loosened up. What can be giving that much to let the belts loosen? The small pulley is mounted to the crankshaft of a Honda engine. The large pulley drives a high pressure pump.

Bottom picture shows how loose they were after removing the spreader.
