I used to use chlorine tablets and they worked great but then was told that they mess up ph and will cause issues with chemical. I stopped using them but can't really say that i ever noticed an issue with chemicals but performing. Any thoughts?

Had a neighbor that used to add a citrus product to their water to improve it. This was not related to algae but supposedly changed the ph to allow the chemicals to work better. This product may have been snake oil but they believed in it at the time. They would dump this product in the pure water tank until the water color changed which was the sign that enough had been used. They got their water from their own wells and observed that it took more of the magic juice to get the color change at one well.
