Anther idea I've had that I want to try some day is to mount a pump to a pipe, and have it on a stand of sorts. Let that sit on the bottom and draw water up the tube to pump out. It's so much colder down low I think it would be much better water to use.

Problem is my pumps are oddly shaped and not easily attached to a pipe, so I haven't tried yet. For now I just tie a weight to the pump, throw it in to sink it, and the hose attached to the pump keeps it from going to the bottom, so it's suspended half way down. I used to make little rafts for the pumps to float on the surface, but didn't like how warm the surface water got on hot sunny days.
