I have an organic poultry customer that is feeding, I think, an alfalfa pellet to layers. Or maybe it is an alfalfa powder type product. Apparently the xanthophyll in alfalfa darkens the yolks like his customers require.

My question which he couldn't answer, was could we just flake off locally grown square bale alfalfa hay to the hens and meet their xanthophyll requirements? Maybe they would waste the stems, where his pellets economically take advantage of all that. These are free range birds, commercial houses with outdoor access.

Does anybody know prices of organic alfalfa? I felt like I was getting lowballed when discussing what price local square bale alfalfa would compare to his trucked in product. This might be a bad idea, but just considering it. I think there are alternate markets if it doesn't work out.

Not sure about FLA but large squares of organic dairy alfalfa were north of $400/ton delivered into MD and south PA last winter and this past spring.
