S Illinois | 50+ rainfall isn’t all that great if half of that falls in Sept-Mar. Great for keeping the subsoil charged but a pain when trying to plant. What SD experienced with regard to planting delays last year is actually somewhat normal further east. When average rainfall in Mar, April and May is between 4-6” each month stand establishment is difficult. Then throw in higher transpiration rates and the higher annual rainfall is negated. There is a reason why W IA can grow such good corn and on the scale they do. Rainfall timing is a much bigger deal than yearly rainfall total. | |
