just a tish NE of central ND
I really did very little shotgun shooting untill later in life.
... That said, Either a 12 or 20 gauge.Might look for a 20 gauge 870 remington YOUTH gun if you can find an older one. The newer ones are fine too but take time to get the action to limber up like a broke in gun.
He can always move up to a 12 once his shoulder can take the punishment.
The reason I say that is because with the 20 gauge, the shells are more affordable and common than a 410 or 28. The hitting power is better than 410 and 28, but still shy of a 12 gauge and so is the kick, and Im 58 and still carry around a 20 gauge youth gun because its short and light and convenient in a vehicle and has killed a lot of skunks and pheasant and stuff just because its right there. So your son will probably shoot it off and on the rest of his life or pass it on to his kids. 12 is the most common gun and It has to do with hitting power and availability of ammunition and the price. There are a LOT of great shotguns available so shop around.
