During the heat of summer apple trees can become deficient in calcium. Right before harvest the tree will pull calcium back out of the fruit as it matures causing what is called bitter pit. Although there are multiple products that contain calcium, studies show calcium chloride is the the easiest form for foliar uptake. Some varieties are more susceptible to bitter pit. The all wonderful Honeycrisp is the worst at least for us.
