Fontanelle, IA | Periods of heat and drought are nothing new for a lot of us. Eventually, we will get rain.... but you just don’t know when. If we stay hot and dry, there is a higher likelihood of southern rust blowing up from the south. But, spraying now, residual might be all played out.... so you’d have to spray a 2nd fungicide round possibly?
You are going to have to prioritize your fields and hybrids. Your 150 bu yellow clay fields even with excellent stands may be cooked/top end lowered so that economic payback is negative return. Your “Alamo” fields are your best, water available soils where top end is significantly higher. Probably have a higher yielding fuller season hybrid planted that “responds” to fungicide. If you are needing to spend money on fungicide, then spend it on your Alamo fields. | |
