Here is a link to a drip irrigation supplier in California which has some information about the various systems. I am sure you have suppliers closer to you. Using T-tape tubing would probably work.
Drip systems can get expensive and you need clean water. Thirsty varmints can cause headaches too. I am sure Illinois ag extension has info on drip irrigation too.
