Lancaster, OH | Is one reason we don't see as many minority farmers the same reason we don't see many young people starting farming on their own?
That is, it seems to me that there is a degree of family inheritance involved in who is farming. Farmers tend to be the sons/daughters of farmers. That base of operation (ground, equipment, experience, etc.) is what makes that possible.
I know there are more but I only know of one farmer I've worked with that came into farming on his own and he was backed by a bankroll of his previous career.
If anyone, no matter the race, walked out one day as a young man/woman to farm on his own, how probable is it that he/she would bet the financing to start and be able to last? | |
