Subject: RE: Most Profitable Crop Question

southern MN
On a very small scale I can make a 3 year rotation of;

Corn.

Soybeans.

Oats with cover crop seeded, combine oats, bale straw, have neighbor apply hog manure, watch cover crop grow.

Work out pretty nicely. It basically makes the corn crop better and cheaper to produce, but you dont quite make as much on the small grain acres, but you don’t spend as much either and the work load gets spread out a little. Neighbor is so happy to get some hog manure moved in August that he hasn’t billed me in a few years, that makes the program look really good until that bill comes. Of late the small grains are tough with the late springs and wet summers. At the moment I have a nice looking oat crop for a change, but not counting those unhatched eggs yet..... again this is small potatoes acre wise, 15 of each is all.

Typically, corn is king here, it likes our soils and wetness more then beans do, so corn is the crop. Most of us are 2/3 corn around here.
