While they have tripled farm production since 1978, it has been at a high cost. The extensive industrialization has reduced farmland area by 6%. There are high cadmium residue levels in their home grown rice. Cadmium is a byproduct of all the factories, a heavy metal that is a known carcinogenic. Their fertilizer and energy systems are primarily coal based which has raised pollution levels.
