| Most of the big companies have two different numbers, one for new barns built to their spec and then a another number for existing barns. Most new barns built to a givens company’s spec is usually paid on 7.2 to 7.75 sq ft per pig. Existing space is often calculated at 7.5 to 8 plus sq ft per pig.
Remember actual stocking rate in the barns may be completely different from what is paid on. I’ve heard actual stocking rates as low as 6.5 in the last few years.
