East Central Iowa | Here Sheriff's Deputies respond to calls and spend time in the contract towns for the most part. It's better than it used to be several years ago. Until the mid 2000's the Deputies would get bitched at by the Captain for to many miles on their cars. The only purchased X amount of cars each year and they had to last X number of years for budget reasons. If people saw a deputy on a gravel road they thought something must be going on.
At that time the Deputies said if they were the West end car and made a loop hitting all of the contract towns and back to the office over their shift, they had enough miles on for the day. Of course who ever had the most cell phone minutes received a call each month telling them they were the high minutes for the month. Even if they weren't over the limit.
After that Captain retired things improved for the Deputies a lot. Now we have a bunch of young deputies who go out and kick a$$ which as a tax payer is nice to see.
We are a high traffic fatality county. I don't hear of any restrictions on them now. Prior to 2000, the old Sheriff didn't like a lot of traffic enforcement, so the Deputies then knew when to quit working traffic. | |
