Subject: RE: High yield milo

Eastern Shore of MD
We grow for some bird seed folks and one national company we deal with had a buyer (that we personally had dealt with) in the area and he paid us a visit. He buys milo and deals with growers from all over the country. We asked him the same question.

His response was that he couldn’t put a finger on it. His thoughts were that it seemed more geographically influenced than management. Had some guys really pushing things to get 130 and then had others that could grow 180-200 all day long.

There were some big yields not too terribly far from us in nj last year. We are trying to push N and spoon feed it like corn in some trials this year. We put a base of 90# and then have fertigated 3 times thus far (and I think we are done with N). Very curious to see how it turns out, we have three varieties in that trial as well.

For being so hardy, it’s tough to figure out. We put a new pivot up last year and had milo on the field already. It got dry late, we ran it several times, probably gave it 3” overall at we thought was a critical time. The response was very disappointing.

I had thought of fungicide; interesting to read previous responses of those that have tried it.

Good luck and keep us posted!
