I too fight the outside grass board or rooster tail is what I call it. I was pissed one day and took it off. Hasn't been on in 10 years. I cut hay with brother-in-law and he took his off too about 10 min after I did. We were cutting brome yesterday. His is still off. I have moved on to a disk mower. My neighbor runs a sickle mower and doesn't seem to have any problems at all but he is mainly in Alfalfa.
