Replies to Jrditchdigger above cover the why. As for population, most of us are running the same number of corn plants per acre as 30" rows. I set my 6 row planter at 32k for the check strips, upped it to 48k and blocked off rows 2 & 5, then upped it to 65k and blocked off rows 2, 4,& 6.
