The packer doesn’t care what a calf brings, 300 or 3000. They are a business, it’s all about margins and maximizing profit. Cow calf has forever been a low margin game. Stocker cattle margins as well as feeding margins have lowered over time due to increase in efficiency.
1000 stockers isn’t the same work load now as it was 30 years ago. Leading to reduced return.
The hay barns that were filled with small squares in this country are storage sheds for round balers.
I agree -we all need to get more better in what we do everyday-feeding is getting to be numbers game-I still admire my mentor that feed 5,000 head a year by himself for several years-30 years ago |
