S Illinois | From reading, the SA infestation sounds more like the grasshopper problem the Great Plains would see from time to time. One number put out was the swarm was 15sq km. or say roughly 4000 acres. Devastating for that location, but in the whole scheme of things pretty localized. Colder weather will obviously stop them and insecticides work on them. From the sounds of it mainly hitting pasture areas currently. As to some sort of jump to global grain killer, not in the cards. A simple google search shows similar articles from 2017 and I am sure prior years also. | |
