Many have changed to just planting a forage small grain, then planting only alfalfa in the early fall. That seems to work pretty good, and addresses the problem you mention.
How bad are the rodents in stored bales when you bale headed out oats? I did a few small square bales once, like 10 bales, and boy never again on that deal I’d have to come up with something different......
