The auger on the header is just not designed to handle the volume of tough wet material that the chopper can handle, and it’s certainly not designed to shove it in to the relatively very small opening of the feed rolls. You can put in a kit to hold the fedrolls open which will help, but you’re still asking a lot of the auger. The JD 40 and 90 series augers already are undersized and overspeed, which causes them to tend to throw cobs under normal running conditions. Give the auger all the help you can.
Cross drive kits aren’t free and I don’t see how they can be easier to mount on the machine than an adaptor. Spend a little more and get a proper adaptor, get easier running, more speed, and better resale value when you’re done with it.
