southern MN | I was amazed at how few bales the neighbor got off his alfalfa field. It’s getting a little weak, but there wasn’t much to pick up. His good new field isn’t next door, but from a distance didnt look much better.
Grass hay actually looks good here as it is made from ground too wet to crop. The previous 4 years was nothing, first cutting was in late August last year..... so it was just wonderful to cut and bale dry grass in June and it comes out green! But, if I can remember back to good years, it was indeed thinner than normal this year. Less volume than we used to get.
Hopefully at least we can get a good second cutting this year. It is dry which leads to smaller second cut, but we have a lot of subsoil moisture for the deeper grasses to draw from for a while yet.
