Smallest row spacing you can get is ~19" if I recall correctly.
You are correct that the system didn't like the 2 extra rows between the guide rows.
Unless you have really narrow tires I doubt the system will track down 15" rows well, Not enough wiggle room.
Might be best off just going across the rows in the narrow 15".
Could try using 30" and seeing how it works.
