For vitamin D in the winter, cod liver oil is the richest source, lard is second. So when people were eating significant amounts of lard, they likely had less seasonal depression.

Pregnant women were to take a tablespoon of codkiver oil daily when pregnant. This supplemented them for omega 3 fats to build the brain of children. Today, very little omega 3 in diet, and a lot more omega 6. One would predict brain function in offspring and women to be affected.
