| If you started with good subsoil moisture Unniversity Illinois says four 1/2" rains at the critical time is all that's needed to make a crop. I know soil type plays a key role but that was pretty much the case here in 2012. Hot & dry but did get small showers at critical times. Everybody was dreading starting harvest figuring wed have low yields but ended up with very good corn.
1988 we started with a great looking crop potential. Rain shutoff first of June & didnt rain again until first part of Aug. E very body remembers the drought of '88, crops were a disaster. Neighbors planted corn late June, had 180 bu corn. Most everything g else was under 100 bu on good ground. Lot of poor ground wasn t worth harvesting.
