SW MN - mt. lake/windom | China may have been buying a lot of pork but we have been losing ground in the exports to China since trade war started. Prior to trade war, the u.s. had 14% market share of imported pork to China. It fell to 8% and 11% respectively the following 2 years. Just to get back to 2017 14% market share of imports of pork we would need to export 4.1 mmt. Precorona estimates were 3.7 mmt. That’s a shortfall of about 4 million hogs. Our exports have been suffering the last 2 years but that’s not the issue at hand. The issue at hand that means we need a 15% reduction in production is that expectations are that we cannot slaughter at the same rate post covid. | |
