Is there something about the politics in Iowa that causes so much concentration ? The borders are visibly outlined.
Iowa makes the complete database of sites with Manure Management Plans available on line...The state DNR even have a interactive web map already available to the public. This would be confinements with more than 1250 finishing pigs for example. As I scrolled through the map locally, this group only has sites marked that came from the state. My sheep didn't make the cut nor did any of the neighbors' small cow herds.
Second part to your question, yes it is also political. Iowa is not a local control state(there is some local input on larger sites, but true local control). Everyone that meets the state's requirements gets to have a site. Requirements are strait forward and fairly black and white. We are generally pretty livestock friendly because we would have a huge pile of corn to get rid of if the livestock were not eating it. The local feed mill adds 15-20 cents to the local price. |
