Assuming a disc type unit. I can run 10mph in moderate hills with 145hp JD4430 on a 13ft discbine. With that said I prefer my 180hp MFWD. Extra weight is nice for stopping. This is mowing 2 ton alfalfa orchard mix hay.

I would say the bigger unit is actually easier on the mower because I can run at less than PTO speed if I want 850-900 pto rpms is a lot easier than running full bore.

I use a big 1000 to small adaptor on the larger tractor. If you buy a really good clap on unit it’s fine. The cheap ones don’t hold up.
