E ND | Are you an iPhone user? If so I'd lean hard towards an iMac, pushing your price range but they really are good products that seem to run and run without issues. They're all pretty fast now, unless you're doing hard core photo or video editing you'll be fine with even their most basic models. You can buy MS Office for them also.
My wife and I both use Windows PC's at work but have iPhones/iPads and an iMac at home. We just replaced a 14 year old iMac last month with a new 27" version and had them transfer items over so we could have the older iMac set up for the kids to use.
My only gripe is the fashionable apple accessories (keyboard, mouse) are pretty minimalist and don't agree with my hands. You can get used to it or get normal keyboards aftermarket.
