That could certainly have been true. Sherman's role was pivotal in the election and winning the war. To me, he is as colorful and interesting as Grant and Lee. He had his eccentricities, like many of the greats do but he was quite effective. As many historians are quick to point out, Sherman knew from the start that it would not be a short conflict and he knew that in order to end it, it would have to be taken to the doorstep of the civilians. | |
