Embarrass WI
I filled my tanks with dirt all the way to the bottom, I put a piece of cinder block over the drain hole so it didn't plug with dirt. My thinking was deeper dirt = more water holding capacity. A friend put styrofoam insulation partway up on his so that his compact tractor would still be able to lift them. He cut most of the bottom out of another tank so that (theoretically) ground water could wick up to the plant roots. He should be able to tell me this fall what works the best.

Edit-My drain holes are on the side, as close to the bottom as I could get-within an inch. Drain holes are about 3/4 inch. I didn't want the tanks to be full of water.
