SE VA/NE NC | I had all of your problems and more with no till, like slugs, broadcast cover crop not reaching the soil due to the thick mat of residue, smeared sidewalls and unclosed trenches, and nitrogen loss (dry and liquid not incorporated).
Deep tillage hasnt worked well here lately the wetter it gets, and strip till doesnt have a place with our tight/odd shaped fields and 15" beans.
So this year i built a vertical till taking some good ideas from a couple VTs i liked, and high speed discs. Ive been running it hard this year over just about every different scenario i can find and so far im thrilled with the outcome in most. I have pictures and videos of each scenario before and after planter. I wont post them because i do plan to start manufacturing them fall of 2021, so i dont want to be in here trying to promote with my bias. But if you want to see what worked for me to fix the same issues, my email is good. Otherwise, my closest production tool out there id recommend would be a Salford I-2200 with 8 wave blades on every row.
I have a Case 335vt and the 18* gang angles are just too aggressive on a machine like that, combined with the 7.5" blade spacing, you just get chunks too big and uneven in my soil types. Same with the Landoll version i owned with 11* gang angle.
