Subject: JD 8300 RPM reading incorrect

West Central IL

I've got a Deere 8300 that the engine rpm's are intermittently indicating about half what they should.  For example sometimes when I start it up, the RPM shows about 430-450, but the engine is idling normal as it should.  When you rev it up it still shows about half what the engine is actually running at.  Then sometimes it works fine.  I replaced the rpm speed sensor, but that didn't help.  Any ideas where to look.  TIA.
