SW “Ohia” | Hello All,
I’m curious if anybody on here feeds beef calves in a sawdust pack barn.
This setup has me interested because of the ability to manage manure in-barn for a full season. Handling manure in the winter here is absolutely impossible and stockpiling is something I’d prefer to avoid. I would plan to do the annual cleanout after wheat harvest which is also the driest time of the year in this region. A Garvo type pole barn is my early idea.
What are the management points for this type of barn? Challenges? Square feet per head? (I’ve found dairy suggestion around 80-100 square feet per head. Equivalent for beef?) How much sawdust do you add regulalry? I understand the sawdust needs tilled/cultivated daily and am willing to commit to that for the other advantages.
