NW Indiana | This idiot on the internet but maybe I have a valid argument. So if it made sense to store unpriced bushels why doesn't the ABC's and every other elevator do it? Or are farmers smarter than them or just have more knowledge about what the market will do? Why doesn't your local elevator take in 5 million bushels unpriced? Simply because they are in the business of getting paid to store by earning the carry and basis. Why in the world would I think I am smarter than a whole industry? Yes there has been many examples of years price rose the following spring and guys sold their unpriced bushels in the bin for more money then the previous fall. But why aren't they just selling the carry in the new crop while they earned the carry in the old crop?
Anyone using a bin properly will be far and away ahead of someone using it as a speculation tool in a carry market working against you. But again this is just the opinion of an internet idiot.
