East of Broken Bow
When my wife and I got married, we planted a couple fruit trees in the yard.
Now that we have kids, they enjoy going out in the summer, and picking themselves an apple or a few cherries.
I prefer eating the apple, but the cherry blossoms do look nicer IMO, and you never really have to clean up the fruit it drops. Also, when ripe, cherries attract all sorts of birds, if you like bird watching.
Get dwarf trees, not only will they not grow to overshadow the house, but it is easier for kids to reach the fruit. I believe they also don't root out like the full size ones.
We put our trees quite a ways from the house, to keep the roots away from the foundation. We just located them, so that they are in the right place, visually, as you approach down the driveway.
