Subject: RE: John Deere 4430 Oil

First of all it helps if you understand the hydraulic system. The transmission pump pulls oil from the sump through the removable suction SCREEN. The pressured oil from the pump then is routed to the forward filter and from there supplies the transmission valve block on left hand side of transmission case. The various passages and valve spools control the flow of oil to the foot pedal valve, PTO control valve, sends oil over to the shift valve on the right hand side of transmission case and controls the operating pressure and relief settings of the system. After those needs are met oil is routed to the front pump. Now the oil pressure is raised to around 2200psi and is used to steer, brake and supply the differential lock in the cab. After those needs are met the rockshaft and selective control valves are supplied. The return oil from those rear functions ONLY is returned to the rear filter. That filtered oil is returned directly into the low pressure (transmission control) side of the system. So if you used the tractor for days not using the rear functions there would be NO flow through the rear filter. If you find metal in the rear filter the ONLY place it can come from is the rockshaft cylinder or something plugged in a scv. If you find metal or debris in the front filter it can ONLY come from inside the tractor. Nothing wrong with your tractor, you just happened to have some oil a little different that just happened to be trapped in the system. Think about what the tractor was last hooked to using a remote and that will be your answer. And do not worry about brakes until the suction screen or front filter plugs. Hope this helps.
