Southern Pa. | I've seen viscous fan drives go bad with less than that, (wouldn't cool properly) and I've seen them go 10k before replacement. Sorry, I can't comment on just replacing the bearing, I don't recall ever doing that.
You definitely don't want the fan hitting the radiator, that would get expensive quick!!
It does sound like a spell of wet weather coming, you should have some time to do a little experimenting, if you're in the mood!!
Hopefully KTA or someone else with more experience will chime in, and steer you the right way.
