Question all you want, I can't remember the numbers but I'm pretty sure that 70% of the heat went out the exhaust. My teacher was a 22 year retired veteran of the US navy starting as a mechanic and ending as a research engineer. He was very educated and knew everything you wanted to know about diesel engines. According to him the navy went to great lengths to be more efficient so ships could travel lighter and stay out at sea longer. While in school I was skeptical about his expertise because he was such a big fan of 2 stroke Detroit Diesels. Now I look back and think he knew more than I gave him credit for.
