Canadians sure don't, we were there for the US like we always have been , letting a lot of US bound planes land in Newfoundland , ordinary citizens housing & cooking for these Americans which we would do in a heartbest for a friend & neighbour.....
And we will always remember the POTUS stopping./banning 3 m from sending any masks to Canada...........
You know, Redoak, after you saying that and what I just experienced trying to pass into Canada to pick up some fresh seed oats this morning, you've struck a very raw nerve with me!
Let me explain, and i hope I don't get too long winded: my seed supplier in Staffa contacted me yeasterday wanting to know if I was ready to pick up my oats. Yes, but first checked with the authorities on both ends of the bridge to see if it was ok to do so. People I talked on both sides said it was ok, agriculture and all that, just make sure you've got your inspection and analysis certificate from the seller and the invoice to present coming back into the States. Ok, fine, I'll be there to pick up 30 units (@1,500#) tomorrow. Don't need a broker for that small a purchase and it being for personal use, not resale.
Now here's where things go off the rails. Get to Canadian entry and as per normal I was asked and I replied in my typical polite manner, just why I want to enter the realm of the Maple Leaf...seed oats, no more, no less...and I'd called ahead with the authorities, to ensure this wouldn't entail some problem, just to indicate I wasn't going off half cocked. Little did I know this would trigger a tirade about the inability of the Ontario heath care system, paragon of efficiency that it is made out to be, to handle this grave situation because it just didn't have the basic supplies. Furthermore, it's people like me, poor greedy, feeble, little American farmer that's responsible for the sorry state they find themselves in. Mind you this entire sermon is punctuated with the most coarse profanity. I do believe he took the Lord's name in vain as well. So much for the sanctity of Holy Week. Ok, bud, so let's cut to the chase, you want me to turn around? So be it, it's your show. Nope, go to that building and be processed. There, a nice young fella takes 45 minutes to check 2 boxes on a pre printed one page form while I sit alone watching two other border type authorities sitting on a stool staring off into the empty space across the empty lobby. Eventually, I'm given an escort, flashers whirring in the clear Canadian air, around the toll booths, west bound across the Blue Water Bridge. National calamity averted, at least for the moment.
So, I'm thinking I just had a run in with some trumped up, self important ginger with authority issues and probable sexual dysfunction to add to his list of personal problems, who decided to get off on taking his frustrations out on the next Yankee trying to get into his country. Ok, no harm, no foul, but I can get insulted a whole lot closer to home, if that's what I'm looking for.
Now I'm thinking this all got triggered by what you stated in your post. If that's it, you guys are altogether to thin skinned.
Just to add: I'm not upset over getting turned back, that's just the way things are, though they could have said that when I called yesterday afternoon and saved the bother. What I'm a more than a little upset about is the rude, unprofessional behavior of that border official. If that happened on the good old American side, at least I could call up my congressman and complain. Might not do much good, be even so all I can do now, is kvetch on an talk!
