Neal,

IIRC, both straight 8 and straight 6 engines have primary and secondary balance.

The smoother sound of the 8 may be due to the even number of firings per rev.

Torsional vibration in the crank and cam can cause problems at high speed. That and space limitations probably tipped the scales to V-8s way back when.
