Subject: RE: 4 cylinder engines and balancers-engine theory

S.E. Washington
They all have primary balance, two cylinders up, two down, which offset each other. It's the secondary balance, side to side, that John Deere was after. The Cummins 4B, great little engine, shakes like crazy because of no secondary balancers.
The JD has secondary balance, and that makes it just a bit smoother at low speeds.
The one that gets me was the early four cylinders without even primary balance. They just relied on a massively strong crankshaft and a huge flywheel.
Hopefully somebody can more technically explain the primary and secondary balance, but I tried to get the discussion going!
