Not sure of the words you used what you are comparing.

I know of people who have what is known here as a wood furnace which has forced air ( a fan and ductwork).
It is located int eh basement of their house and also has an oil option if they do not have enough wood or wish to go on vacation.

We have an out door wood furnace but the hot water from it is pumped through a rad which has a fan and ductwork to distribute the heat just like the wood furnace (or oil or gas) would do.

Our out door furnace also heats our hot water (too hot, has to have a blender valve to keep it cool enough to be safe) in both house and shop and heats the shop too.
The hot water is circulated to buildings in underground insulated pipes.

Out door furnace takes larger and longer pieces of wood than the neighbours furnace does and allows mechanical handling of wood more than indoor furnace
