If we let our oil companies go out of business and we rely even more non domestic oil that would be horrible for national security. We need to revamp oil refineries to utilize light sweet crude in the meantime so e don't have to ship in heavy crude from the middle East.
If they went broke, SOMEONE would take up the slack when the price went back up.
When the gov't starts interfering in business, nothing good ever comes of it. Propping up a business which should have failed is wrong. The failed business would have been bought by a more savvy businessman.
