Subject: RE: 170 k less Spring Wheat Intentions in SD

Spring wheat prices should buy some acres, if conditions permit it up further north aways. Not sure they can get it planted in a timely fashion due to soil moisture.

Southern SD is pretty much winter wheat territory, to the degree wheat gets planted at all anymore. A lot of people tried it in the first half of the 2000s when corn was cheap, but even winter wheat is getting rare around here. We are kind of in a high risk/high reward area for both types. Summers get too hot and dry for spring wheat, and winters are sometimes too harsh for winter wheat. "Our forefathers chose their location poorly", my father used to like to say. He always thought wheat farmers had it easy since they didn't have to spend weeks on a cultivator. On the other hand, our forefathers could have stayed in the Ukraine and we would all be dead or worse now, so I guess they did pretty well in the grand scheme of things.

But I digress....won't see much if any spring wheat around our area. Just doesn't work well here.
