Subject: RE: spring wheat question

We like to be finishing spring wheat and starting corn around the time cottonwood trees are starting to leaf out here in SWND which is usually the first week of May. We are far enough north that late planting doesn’t always result in significant yield loss, but it usually does. In 2007 we were able to seed for a few days Around March 20 then got shut down until April. The march seeded wheat yielded in the mid 40s, April seeded wheat was in the mid 30s and the guys that were still seeding in to May were down in the 20s. 2011 our best wheat was seeded in June. I’m not sure how this might apply to SWNE, as our climates are similar, but you experience a much warmer spring and summer. Here in SWND 87 day corn is full season, 72 day is early and anything longer than 89 day is silage. Grain sorghum isn’t grown here as it rarely matures.
