Subject: What is this "thingy" on an old Deere ignition switch?

Madison Co. Virginia

What is the purpose of this resistor? coil on a 3020 ignition switch? It's the cylindrical white thing in the picture.

I replaced the wiring harness on this tractor, and I think I have it wired correctly. As best I can tell, that resistor coil is connecting two terminals on the back of the switch. One terminal is live while in the "run" position, and the other is fed from that live terminal through that resistor. That resistor-fed terminal is connected to the coil and alternator. I can understand running the coil through a resistor(not applicable any more, since this tractor has electronic ignition), but I'm pretty sure you don't want the alternator field coils to be energized through a resistor.

When I turn the tractor on, that resistor gets smoking hot. I'm sure that's not correct, but I'm not sure where I went wrong.
